ASA Must Listen to CAM Leaders

2nd August 2011

The Advertising Standards Authority met with the Alliance for Natural Health (ANH) and Complementary Medical Association (CMA) on 29th July 2011, to discuss the hundreds of threatening emails sent out to natural health practitioners asking them to remove health claims and testimonials from their websites.  According to the ASA, these practitioners have breached the ASA’s British Code of Advertising, Sales Promotion and Direct Marketing (The CAP code).

The emails were sent out after a well orchestrated campaign from the skeptic organisation the Nightingale Collaboration, which encouraged skeptics of complementary medicine to inundate the ASA with letters of complaint.

ANH and CMA maintain that the ASA is not sufficiently qualified to adjudicate and felt the future of CAM would be eroded if they continue with this heavy handed policy.
