First-Aid Kit for pets

As a homeopath, I advise all my patients to have a First Aid Kit. In accidents and emergency situations these kits, used quickly to treat family and friends on the scene of the incident, can save untold suffering, and even save lives.  And First Aid Kits are no less important for our pets.  Build yourself a kit now, better still one for home and one for the car - and don't forget to take it on holiday with you if you're taking a pet! Read the full article for our suggestions for your Pet First Aid Kit and save your pet from unecessary distress and save yourself money from unecessary vets bills.

Depressed pets

Just like humans, cats, dogs and other animals can become depressed. And just like in humans, many different things can cause an animal's depression. If you have recently noticed that your cat or dog has stopped eating with gusto, isn't as enthusiastic about fetching balls or chasing laser lights, or has turned into even more of a couch potato than usual, then depression may very well be the culprit.

Medications administered to depressed animals are often the same used to treat depression in humans, but Tranquil+ is an animal supplement formulated as a traditional herbal supplement that can help with some of the more common behavioural problems in both cats and dogs . Like humans, most animals who become depressed as the result of a loss or profound change can adapt and bounce back from depression. You can help by rewarding signs of happiness with praise and treats. On the other hand, avoid lavishing an animal who is moping with attention and treats, as this is essentially reinforcing the depressed behavior. Getting a new pet to keep your pet company may also relieve his depression. One supplement which has been useful for stubborn behaviour in animals has been Over dominant essence, this is based on flower tinctures.  Read the full article . . .

Poultry pick me up

If you want to pop out each morning and find eggs freshly laid for your breakfast then use Keep-Well Poultry Tonic for your hens. It contains an effective blend of seven herbs including Ginseng and Echinacea, plus calcium, sunflower oil and seaweed meal – with no chemicals and will not result in an egg withdrawal period.

Keep-Well pellets are added to your poultry’s daily feed to assist with addressing conditions such as soft shells, and it is also ideal when your birds are moulting. We use it regularly for our hens and despite the dry weather they have not experienced any egg withdrawal. If your hens do need an all-round performance booster then you are best to give them Poultry Zest ( now only £5.50p) with their feed. However we do make our hens a lovely wholesome mash from leftover veggy peelings every other day and this must supplement the supplement!  Read more . . .

Fish Oils for dogs and cats

Fish oil is good for dogs and cats.  The trouble is, their food is even more lacking in these oils than ours.  Omega 3 is vital for flexible, agile joints and a smart brain. Omega 6 brings a healthy skin, glossy coat and good immunity.  We also recommend it for pets with a wide variety of conditions ranging from kidney disease to arthritis and high cholesterol. Adding fish oil to your pet's food provides anti-inflammatory effects and can help relieve itching due to many allergy-related skin conditions.

Omega 3 oils support heart, vision and joint health, provide important nutrients for proper immune function, and nourish the skin and coat. First suggested for use in treating allergies in pets, they are now used in many aspects of health-care.  Our fish free 3:6:9 Omega oil is ideal for pets who don't like a fishy taste! Fish oil supplementation may be helpful for pets with inflammatory diseases including allergies, arthritis, kidney disease, heart disease, and cancers. Pets with any type of inflammatory disease may benefit from fish oil supplementation. In general, more severe disease requires doses higher than those commonly recommended.  For dogs we recommend Almost Human SuperDog Omegas 3:6:9 capsules or for cats use Almost Human EssentialCat Omegas 3:6:9 drops.  As with other supplements, the use of fatty acids often allows vets and doctors to lower the dosages of drugs such as corticosteroids or antihistamines, which is obviously going to reduce potential side effects for your pet, but will also save you money!  Read more about omega fatty acids for pets
