When Wagner contracted typhoid fever in 1839, Dr. Prutzer, a homeopathic physician saved his life.

Wagner used homeopathy for the rest of his life, and he also frequented water cure spas and consulted Ernst Schwenninger who was scathing in his attacks on allopathic medicine.

Wagner’s friend Giacomo Meyerbeer was also an advocate of homeopathy, and Wagner had his portrait painted by Pierre Auguste Renoir.

Wagner was also a prominent advocate of vegetarianism, and he also supported the anti vivisection campaign.

Wagner was a close friend of Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche.
